Welcome to The Atomic Heritage Foundation

Welcome to the Atomic Heritage Foundation!  The Atomic Heritage Foundation (AHF) is a non-profit organization in Washington, DC dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Age.

In 2006, the Atomic Heritage Foundation took on the mission of the Manhattan Project Heritage Preservation Association (MPHPA), formerly the Children of the Manhattan Project.  To continue the work begun by the MPHPA, we have redesigned and streamlined this website.  It remains the largest repository for primary source material about the Manhattan Project on the web, as well as the largest database of Manhattan Project veterans.  To find material from the previous MPHPA site, please explore the new site through the menu on the left.  The entire MPHPA site is still available by clicking on the "Classic" link.

For the latest news about our work, please visit the News section.

For more details on all of our current projects and past accomplishments, visit the Projects page.

If you have any questions or concerns about the new site, please contact This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .

Did You Know?

During World War II it was rumored that the Army Air Force had been seen dropping pumpkins instead of bombs.  Actually, this rumor originated from someone who had learned or heard sensitive information from someone with the 509th Composite Group.  During practice bombing missions, the 509th Composite Group dropped "test" bombs of approximate size and weight of the "Fat Man" bomb.  These test bombs were mustard colored and were referred to as "pumpkins".
