Alaska Silver Salmon Fishing

The Lodge

Silver salmon season, late July to mid August, on the Nushagak River is a secret that most fisherman are not privy to. This fishing during this time surpasses other areas due to the extremely low numbers of anglers on this huge river. When the high numbers of silvers arrive on the tides from the Bristol Bay the fishing is unbelievable!

BBA operates the lodge during this timeframe on a relaxed schedule to accommodate fisherman who enjoy true wilderness fishing with no stress of other anglers and who enjoy catching large numbers of fish.

Due to the reduced number of anglers the river is very quiet and with very little boat traffic our guests can enjoy the peace of the wilderness and Alaskan animal viewing. From your cabin's deck early in the morning and late at night you can watch for moose, caribou, fox, eagles, and bear. This is a real treat only the wilds of Alaska can provide.

The Fish Coho/Silver Salmon

If you have not yet experienced the act of fishing for silvers you should know that the Coho are very aggressive and acrobatic fighters even in freshwater streams and rivers prior to their spawning. Both spin and fly fisherman find fishing for the silvers exciting! It is clear that the allure of fishing for silvers has increased and the secret of this species attributes entice all fisherman. Top water flies and spin lures add to the act of procuring the silvers. Fly fisherman typically use the "popping" action to attract the Coho. Silvers will often chase a fly from 20 to 30 yards. Spinner fisherman will use hot pink, chartreuse, orange, and purple lures. However the presentation, the final act of setting this species brings with it the desperate fight for life from the fish. The set triggers the Coho's acrobatics; first the sliver flash, then line tugged and buried. The fish launches, flipping, flying, jumping, and dipping, the final release of line and the whirling of the reel while landing the catch, time after time, is what fishing for silvers is all about.
This is fishing! It is truly fun and exhilarating!
